I’m all about New Year’s resolutions. There’s something about a new year that makes me feel bold, excited and inspired to try something new. Gone are the days of resolving to lose those “last 5 pounds” because life is just too short. Instead, I’ve made resolutions that range from serious and meaningful to fun and frivolous.
This year one of my resolutions is to wear more lip color, and wear it with confidence. As someone with a lip color phobia, this is going to stretch me out of my comfort zone. Sure it’s a small thing, but it’s fun to have a few resolutions that are fun and easy to achieve.
If you’re like me and not sure where to start, I’ve scoured the drugstore aisles for the most versatile and flattering lip colors I could find. Here are the four that rose to the top:
E.L.F. Matte Lip Color in Natural
This was the most neutral lip color I tried out, and, not surprisingly, also happened to be one of my favorites! The matte lipstick went on super smooth and didn’t dry out my lips one bit. I could easily see this being my new go-to when I want something that makes my lips look a little more polished but doesn’t make a big statement. It really serves as an entry into the realm of lipstick for those of us who don’t usually wear anything besides lip balm on a regular basis.
Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Fresh Papaya
Moving just a tad darker on the spectrum, I decided to give this Neutrogena color stick a try. Chapped lips plague me most of the winter, making it difficult to wear lip color, but I absolutely loved the moisturizing element of this color stick. It feels like a cross between a lip balm and a lipstick and this color was versatile and pleasantly peachy.
Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm in Apple a Day
When I picked out this bright red Almay lip color, I thought it was going to be darker than it ended up being. It is darker than the previous two lip colors I tried, but it’s certainly not the true red it looks like in the bottle. Since this is more of a gloss, it kept my lips moisturized while adding color and it eased me into wearing something darker on my lips.
Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain in Wild Berry Wink
Prior to this, I hadn’t used many lip stains. I love that this product delivers color for a long period of time without requiring you to re-apply multiple times during the day. This Cover Girl lip stain was the most true red, and I was totally worried about it looking comical, however, I found that I really liked the bold look of a red lip, especially when I applied a little clear gloss on top for moisture and shine. Although I can’t see myself wearing a red lip every day, this experience has opened my eyes to how much lip color can change up your look in less than a minute.
How do you feel about lip color? Are you like me and afraid of wearing something bright? Or do you think the bolder the better?
